Ketamine's mechanism of action is still under extensive investigation, but current understanding suggests it differs from traditional antidepressants. While antidepressants affect serotonin, dopamine, or norepinephrine, ketamine enhances brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), fostering neuroplasticity and potentially reversing chronic depression, anxiety, and trauma effects. It also resets the Default Mode Network (DMN), aiding in shifting negative thinking patterns and reducing inflammation by blocking glutamate, a neurotransmitter linked to mental health issues.

When administered by a prescribing clinician at appropriate doses and frequencies for mental health treatment, ketamine appears non-addictive. However, misuse outside clinical settings can lead to abuse, although the risk is low with proper controls. In Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP), careful dosing and monitoring ensure safe usage for healing purposes. KAP also restricts administration frequency to prevent dependence, with close medical supervision throughout treatment to ensure safety and effectiveness.Description text goes here
